Although the host country did not win a gold medal, its athletes delivered memorable performances, laying the foundation for&nbsp;a lasting legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The medal table and the&nbsp;Games&nbsp;overall&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some 6,084 athletes&nbsp;representing&nbsp;92 nations took part in&nbsp;<strong>198 events<\/strong>. The USSR topped the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olympics.com\/en\/olympic-games\/montreal-1976\/medals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">medal table<\/a>&nbsp;with 125 medals, followed by the United States (94 medals) and&nbsp;East Germany&nbsp;(90 medals).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the Canadian team, these Games were a rewarding experience.
