The Montr\u00e9al Games remain a defining moment in Canadian sporting history. Although the host country did not win a gold medal, its athletes delivered memorable performances, laying the foundation for a lasting legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The medal table and the Games overall <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some 6,084 athletes representing 92 nations took part in 198 events<\/strong>. The USSR topped the medal table<\/a> with 125 medals, followed by the United States (94 medals) and East Germany (90 medals).   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the Canadian team, these Games were a rewarding experience. Canada finished with 11 medals<\/strong> (five silver and six bronze), a significant improvement over previous editions.  <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canadian performances, a new chapter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Even without a gold medal, several Canadian performances remain etched in our collective memory.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greg Joy<\/strong>, in pouring rain, cleared 2.23 m in the high jump, winning silver.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At age 14,\u00a0Nancy\u00a0Garapick<\/strong>\u00a0won two bronze medals in the 100 m and 200 m backstroke, becoming the only Canadian athlete to take the podium twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Equestrian Michel Vaillancourt\u00a0wins the silver medal in the individual show jumping Grand Prix, despite extremely difficult and slippery conditions, becoming the only Quebecer to win a silver medal at the Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canoeist John Wood<\/strong> won silver in the C-1 500 m, Canada’s first medal in canoeing since 1952. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Montr\u00e9al 1976, the scene of international achievements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cuban Alberto Juantorena<\/strong> achieved a historic double by winning the 400 m and 800 m, setting a world record.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fourteen-year-old Romanian Nadia Com\u0103neci<\/strong> revolutionized her sport by scoring the first ever \u201c10.00\u201d in Olympic history.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finland’s\u00a0Lasse Vir\u00e9n<\/strong>\u00a0repeated his 1972 feat by winning the 5,000 m and 10,000 m events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soviet gymnast Nikolai Andrianov\u00a0establishes himself as the most decorated athlete of the 1976 Games, with a total of seven medals, including four gold medals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Britain’s David Wilkie<\/strong> ended American dominance in swimming by winning the 200 m breaststroke with a world record.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

American Bruce Jenner<\/strong> (now Caitlyn Jenner) became \u201cking of the Games\u201d by winning the decathlon with a world record of 8,618 points. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
