1. The Québec Flag, an Unsolved Mystery

At the last equestrian competition at the Stadium, a Québec flag mysteriously appeared hanging from the roof, alongside those of other countries. It remained there until the closing ceremony, without any official authorization. A sovereigntist group is suspected of having pulled off the feat, but no one has ever claimed responsibility.

2. A Simple Lighter to Reignitethe Olympic Flame

On July 27, 1976, a sudden thunderstorm extinguished the flame at the Olympic Stadium. Caught off guard, an organizer relit it with a simple lighter—a gesture contrary to Olympic protocol. The mistake was immediately corrected by reigniting the official flame!

3. The Flame Relay… by Satellite!

For the first time, the Olympic torch relay used space technology. The signal from the Olympia flame was transmitted via satellite to Ottawa, where the flame was electronically recreated. A groundbreaking feat for 1976!

4. The Tower Remained Unfinished

Due to repeated workers’ strikes during the construction of the Olympic Stadium, work fell behind schedule. At the time of the Games, the Tower had only been built to a height of 72 m, far from its current height of 165 m, making it the tallest inclined tower in the world.

5. Nadia Wasn’t the Only Athlete to Score Perfect 10s

While everyone remembers Nadia Comăneci, Soviet gymnast Nellie Kim also earned two perfect 10s in 1976, achievements that have largely remained in the shadows.

6. A Host Country Without a Gold Medal

Canada didn’t win a single gold medal at its Games, a first in modern Olympic history. Despite earning 11 medals in Montréal in 1976, the country had to wait until the 1984 Games to claim gold. A reminder that sporting glory isn’t always planned!

7. The Streaker at the Closing Ceremony

During the closing ceremony, a naked man appeared among the 500 dancers. The incident caused widespread astonishment and has become one of the most famous anecdotes of the Games.

8. The African Boycott

A few days before the Games, 19 African countries boycotted Montréal to protest the presence of New Zealand, whose rugby team had played against apartheid-era South Africa. This show of solidarity deprived the Games of hundreds of athletes and led to the cancellation of numerous events.

9. The Rock

During excavation work that began in 1973, more than two million cubic meters of clay and limestone were removed from the site to allow for the construction of the Stadium. However, in one of the athletes’ locker rooms beneath the Olympic pools, the Rock was left in place—causing the engineers to rethink their plans, and bearing witness to all that that transpires at the Olympic facilities.
