Olympic Summer: Stories from Beyond the Podium

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games, McGill Rare Books and Special Collections is diving deep into its collections to unearth some of the lesser-known tales surrounding the city’s Olympic summer. Long remembered for Nadia Comăneci’s perfect 10s and a costly and controversial stadium project, McGill’s exhibition sheds light on other notable people, places, and stories that made the Games a uniquely Montreal experience. From the competition site at McGill’s own Percival Molson Memorial Stadium to political boycotts, the novel ways creative Montrealers promoted their Games, and the many forms of the modernist beaver mascot, Amik, Olympic Summer invites visitors to look back at the Montreal Olympics with fresh eyes. The exhibition presents rarely seen materials including maps, photographs, correspondence, ephemera—even a plastic beaver. We invite you to stop by the McLennan Library Building at McGill this summer to take a look and to stay tuned for more information about corresponding public events.
